Vision
The District Heights Sustainability Committee’s vision is to build a just, sustainable, and equitable community that values and protects our natural environment. We strive to
educate, inspire, and empower residents to adopt environmentally responsible practices, reduce waste, conserve resources, and foster a healthy, resilient community that benefits everyone—regardless of race, income, or background.
We are committed to addressing environmental and climate justice issues and working toward a future where all members of our community have access to clean air, clean water, and a healthy environment.
Mission
The District Heights Sustainability Committee is committed to
promoting environmental sustainability and enhancing the quality of life for residents through
education, outreach, and action. Our mission is to reduce the community’s environmental impact, conserve natural resources,
advocate for environmental and climate justice, and build a more livable and sustainable city.
Monthly Meetings
Meetings are held on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM. The committee meets ten times per year; no meetings take place in August or December unless a special session is called.
Until further notice, all meetings are virtual. Members are encouraged to volunteer at two committee events per year. All District Heights residents are welcome to participate.
City of District Heights Recognizes World Food Day with Official Proclamation
At the February 6, 2025 City Meeting, the District Heights City Commission formally introduced and adopted a Proclamation recognizing World Food Day—a global initiative raising awareness of food insecurity and promoting action toward sustainable and equitable food systems.
Spearheaded by the Sustainability Committee, this recognition reaffirms the City’s commitment to environmental stewardship, food justice, and community resilience. World Food Day, observed annually on October 16, aligns with the United Nations’ call to end hunger and ensure healthy diets for all.
The Proclamation acknowledges:
- The importance of accessible, nutritious food as a fundamental human right
- The need to support local farmers, reduce food waste, and promote sustainable agriculture
- The impact of climate change on global and local food systems
- The City’s dedication to advancing community-led solutions to food insecurity
By honoring World Food Day, the City of District Heights joins a global movement to raise awareness, foster dialogue, and drive collaborative action toward a more sustainable and resilient future.
